Hello everyone, welcome to the sound objects Voices from the Ground.

 

Imagine you are on a lake, somewhere far away. Suddenly, three stones strike the surface from three different points at three different moments. These stones create three individual sequences of waves, which gradually collide with each other and eventually reach the shore as a single wave. What you perceive, standing by the shore, is only one wave, which embodies three distant events radiating from different time and space. Living in a time and place far from this lake, you have no way of knowing the ‘origin’ of where, when and how these stones were thrown into the lake.

Like the three stones and the singular wave, ‘history’ is the accumulation of the collision of individual events, all of which manifest itself to us as a singular event. Different events that take place at different times and places, having nothing to do with each other, begin to resonate with each other at a certain point, creating a sense of an integrated event.

What you receive, as you contemplate the lakeside, is the resonance of all these different events, a feeling as if they had happened at the same time and in the same place. Here you can no longer recognise the origin of things. Human beings experience ‘history’ as a series of events taking place here and now, while you yourself become a stone thrown into the lake.

A wave of resonance that encompasses and surges through all time and space, from ‘there’ to ‘here’, - it is like the flow of blood that emerges with millions of cells when you poke a needle into your skin. Carefully locate converging veins, the vortices in the soil, and pierce them properly. Millions of voices sprouting from the veins of the earth overflow into a gashing stream of sound.

 

I invite you now to witness three soundscapes coming from the soil - the past voices from the matsuri, intertwining different streams and memories. Meet the voices of thousands of years of the forest and dive into the waves coming from each vortex.
